Women's health

Hormones, cycles and the whole picture

Hormonal concerns such as painful or irregular periods, PMS, PMOS and perimenopause changes often touch sleep, mood and energy at the same time. A naturopathic doctor is trained to figure out the web of symptoms that come with hormonal imbalances, including testing hormones when needed.

Common reasons people book

  • Perimenopause: changes to periods, sleep and mood that often start in your 40s. See perimenopause symptoms.
  • PMOS: irregular cycles, that may be associated with weight gain, acne and fertility concerns. See PMOS and naturopathic care.
  • PMS, endometriosis and painful periods: symptoms that take days out of every month.
  • After a baby: energy, mood and pelvic floor recovery, with pelvic floor therapy with Taryn Bloodworth, RNBN.

What an ND can and can't do here

In Manitoba, naturopathic doctors can't prescribe hormones, including menopausal hormone therapy or birth control. If hormone therapy is right for you, that conversation happens with your family doctor, and your ND works around it. NDs can order testing, which you pay the lab for directly.

A team under one roof

Hormonal health rarely sits in one box. At Natura, Dr. Erin Esau, ND (in person and virtual) and Dr. Jayden Dobson, ND (virtual only) work alongside Taryn Bloodworth, RNBN on pelvic health, so you're not starting the story over with every practitioner.

Women's health: your questions

Still unsure?

Call the front desk and we'll help you decide which appointment to book, and we can often find a place to fit you in that may not be visible in online booking.

All questions

Can a naturopathic doctor order hormone testing?

NDs can order testing, including hormone tests. Hormones vary through the cycle and through perimenopause, so your ND will direct which cycle days you need to test. Remember, NDs are not covered under MB Health, so testing is paid by the patient.

Can a naturopathic doctor prescribe bioidentical hormones in Manitoba?

No. In Manitoba, NDs cannot prescribe bioidentical hormones. However, NDs work closely with other practitioners who can, and refer as needed.

Is this only for women?

The page is written for people with periods, but hormonal and metabolic health is part of everyday naturopathic care for everyone. Men and women of all ages are welcome.
