Adjunctive care

Care alongside your cancer treatment

Dr. Erin Esau, ND provides adjunctive naturopathic care during cancer treatment: care that supports you along the cancer journey. It does not treat cancer and is not a substitute for oncology care. Visits include a review of every supplement and medication you take, shared with your team. Dr. Esau, ND is diligent to put a plan together that does not interfere with your oncologist's plan, so please bring in details of your medications, including chemotherapy medications and dosing schedule. Naturopathic care does not replace your oncology team, but the goal is to alleviate your symptoms and help you through the process.

What adjunctive care means

Adjunctive care means that it runs alongside the treatment your oncology team provides, addresses symptoms and the effects of treatment on your body, and is coordinated with that team. Your oncologist remains the doctor who is responsible for your cancer treatment and tracking progression.

  • Supplement and medication review: your ND may prescribe supplements that are safe with your medications and tailored to your health goals. Naturopathic doctors are familiar with medication and supplement interactions, and have tools to check for them, since not all supplements are safe to take at various stages of the cancer journey.
  • Symptoms and effects of treatment: a cancer diagnosis is inherently stressful, and often interferes with sleep, digestion, mood and more. Naturopathic doctors want to help you feel well while you are going through cancer treatment.
  • Pelvic floor therapy: should be considered for cancers of the colon, reproductive tract and genitourinary system, to aid in recovering normal functioning. See pelvic floor therapy with Taryn Bloodworth, RNBN.
  • Movement: Lindsay Porter designs exercise programs for people during and after treatment, with your care team's agreement. See exercise during cancer treatment.

Coordinated with your oncology team

Tell your oncologist and pharmacist that you're seeing an ND, and bring your treatment details to every visit. Dr. Erin Esau, ND will share her notes and recommendations with your team on request, so everyone is working from the same plan.

Questions

During cancer treatment: your questions

Still unsure?

Call the front desk and we'll help you decide which appointment to book, and we can often find a place to fit you in that may not be visible in online booking.

All questions

Will my oncologist be okay with me seeing a naturopathic doctor?

Most oncology teams want to know about everything you take. Tell them you're seeing an ND and share the plan. Recommendations are designed to fit around your treatment, and anything your team is concerned about will be adjusted.

Can I book right after a diagnosis?

Yes. The clinic keeps certain time slots open for these visits because they're often time-sensitive. You can also book in regular shifts; if you're unsure, call the front desk at 204-515-6283.

What should I bring to the first visit?

Your pathology information if you have it, the names of any cancer medications you've been prescribed, a list of all supplements and medications, and recent test results.
